JUNE 21, 2019

Dear League Members,

Happy Summer! I hope the welcoming warmth of June is treating you well.

As many of you know, we lost our beloved Deone Evans on May 3. When I heard the news of her passing, I immediately began thinking of Deone’s presence and the ways she’d offer positive words of encouragement. In the short 4 years I knew her, it was crystal clear Deone was someone to lean on for any League-related question or to just talk. Deone always had the League’s best interest at heart. I recently learned Deone’s estate lists the LWV of Lancaster County as a beneficiary, with a bequest of $5,000. This gift is reminiscent of Deone’s beautiful spirit – let’s use this opportunity to consider the significance of legacy building.

Many members are probably wondering why membership renewals haven't arrived in your mailbox, or why we haven't held an annual meeting yet. Moreover, our post office was temporarily inactive —yikes! So if you've sent us donations in memory of Deone, your envelope was likely returned. As your leader, I take full responsibility for this mishap. Please rest assured, the post office box account is officially restored (through 2020). Board members are working diligently with me on the fall LWV Annual Membership Gathering for October. We're also coordinating a special community dialogue. We promise to share more details upon confirming the guest speaker and venue.

Finally, I must share news about my health status. I was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent a right upper lung lobectomy on April 3, 2019. Fortunately, we caught it early at stage 1A2 and I’m currently cancer free. The best news is I don’t require radiation or chemo! Thank you for the ongoing positive vibes and prayers. I’m literally surrounded by so much love.

My recovery is going remarkably well and I'm doing everything in my power to stay healthy. I’ve slowly returned to working full time at the Lancaster County Community Foundation, but I've significantly reduced community volunteer commitments.

Effective 12/31/19, I will resign as president of the LWVLC. The board is working with me on creating a practical succession plan, which will be presented to Jill Greene, Executive Director of LWVPA.

As always, I’m only a phone call or email away! If you have any questions or would like to meet over cafe/tea, let me know. Thanks for your ongoing commitment to the League and doing all you can toward making democracy work.

All my best,
